The Sustainability Assessment Symposium 2010: Towards Strategic Assessment for Sustainability is now just over 2 weeks away! The draft program is now available on the SAS2010 program page.

I’m sure you will agree that we have a fantastic line-up for both the plenary day on Tuesday 25th May (Day 1) and the concurrent sessions on Wednesday 26th May (Day 2), where there really is something for everyone. Over the course of the two days we will be covering the full range of sustainability assessment practice from the most strategic to the most specific, with plenty in between including presentations of best practice case studies and useful tools and techniques for real-life sustainability assessment.

We would once again like to thank the sponsors of SAS2010: Water Corporation of Western Australia, AECOM, GHD and Curtin University Department of Urban and Regional Planning for making this program possible.

The Symposium Sundowner on Tuesday 25th from 17:00-18:30 at Maria’s on the Terrace in South Terrace Fremantle (the venue for SAS2008!) provides an opportunity to relax with colleagues over a few drinks and finger food – all included in your registration.

To register for SAS2010, just click on the registration button on the sidebar.Registration fees are $770 (inc. GST).

Don’t forget we are also offering the choice of two pre-conference training courses on Monday 24th May –. The cost of each course is $440 (inc. GST).
Course 1: Sustainability Assessment Principles and Practice will be presented by Dr Angus Morrison-Saunders (Murdoch University)
Course 2: Multi-criteria Decision Analysis for Sustainability Assessment will be presented by Associate Professor Des Klass (Curtin University Graduate School of Business) and Dr Jenny Pope (Integral Sustainability).

For international and interstate delegates and speakers who have not yet booked accommodation, the Esplanade Hotel has a number of rooms available at a rate of $198/night. These will be held for us until next Wednesday 12th May. Contact Janice Jensen, Reservations Manager on +61 8 9432 4000 or email: rsm@ehf.com.au.

You have until this Friday 23rd April to take advantage of our Earlybird offer and register for SAS2010 for only $660! Next week the rate will be $770, or $440 for a day registration.

Other SAS2010 news:

Training Courses:
We are also offering two pre-conference training courses, both to be held (concurrently) on Monday 24th May. Course 1: Sustainability Assessment Principles and Practice will be presented by Dr Angus Morrison-Saunders (Murdoch University, Western Australia) and Dr Alan Bond (East Anglia University, UK). Course 2: Multi-criteria Decision Analysis for Sustainability Assessment will be presented by Associate Professor Des Klass (Curtin University Graduate School of Business) and Dr Jenny Pope (Integral Sustainability). The cost of each course is $440 (inc. GST).

Programme:
The SAS2010 programme is almost finalized, and updates are posted under SAS 2010 Updates. We have a fantastic list of speakers, from interstate and overseas as well as our Western Australian community of practitioners. Speakers include: Michelle Andrews (Office of the Environmental Protection Authority); Gary Prattley (Chairman of the Western Australian Planning Commission), Carolyn Cameron (Commonwealth Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts); Peter Newman (Curtin University Sustainability Policy Unit); Scott Harrison (World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Canada); Bryan Jenkins (Environment Canterbury, New Zealand), other experts on strategic assessment from Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the USA, and many, many more. Thank you to everyone who submitted an abstract to present at SAS2010.

Sponsors:
In addition to the Water Corporation of Western Australia, we have three new sponsors to thank: Aecom, GHD and Curtin University. Without the generous support of these organizations, SAS2010 would not be possible – thank you! And there are still sponsorship opportunities available – download the sponsorship package from the sidebar.

Post Symposium Workshop:
The ALCES Group, (www.alces.ca), a team of planners, landuse experts and ecologists specializing in strategic scale landuse models in Canada, will be attending and presenting at SAS2010. They are also offering a FREE workshop on Thursday 27th May to be held at Curtin University Sustainability Policy Unit in Fremantle, offering participants an opportunity to learn about ALCES III, A Landscape Cumulative Effects Simulator. Contact Ewa Szczepaniak at the Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute <E.Szczepaniak@curtin.edu.au> for more information.
