Sustainability appraisal in the UK

This presentation outlines the background and approach used in England for "sustainability appraisal" (SA) of regional and local spatial plans. The SA process relies on development of sustainability objectives and indicators developed to provide a measure of the extent to which draft plan policies achieve these objectives. The indicator measures for the policy alternatives are compared to determine which alternative is best. The presentation concludes with some of the issues and challenges arising from English SA practice.
