Designing deliberation for sustainability assessment

Abstract:
All models of sustainability assessment call for deliberation, however, few offer much in the way of specifics. This presentation focuses on the key findings of two case studies – Fremantle Harbours Policy and the ING Commercial Development – both of which featured exhaustive deliberation as a means of managing anticipated land use planning conflicts as well as assessments and provide excellent examples of what really happens in practice. The intent of this presentation is to highlight the discrepancy between theory and practice and what should be given greater weight when designing deliberation for sustainability assessment for significant land use planning and development, particularly where land use change is riddled with conflict and controversy.
